Course Contents

1. Vectors and Tensors: Vectors, vector spaces, metric, norm and inner product, linear dependence, Gram-Schmidt ortho-normalization, Introduction to tensors, tensor algebra and calculus.

Matrix Algebra: Determinants and properties, Adjoint, self-adjoint operators, Eigenvalue and eigenvectors, solvability conditions, solution of set of algebraic equations, solution of set of ODEs, solution of set of non-homogeneous first order ODEs, non-self adjoint systems, stability analysis, bifurcation theory.

Partial Differential Equations (PDEs): Classification, boundary conditions, linear superposition.
Second order linear PDEs: Classification, canonical forms. Solution methods for hyperbolic, elliptic and parabolic equations: Eigen function expansion, separation of variables, transform methods. Applications from heat and mass transfer, reaction engineering.
5. Numerical solution of linear and nonlinear algebraic equations: Gauss elimination methods, LU decomposition, Newton-Raphson method; Finite difference method for solving ODEs and PDEs. Spectral methods for solving differential equations, Chemical engineering applications from separation processes, reaction engineering, fluid mechanics etc. Self study
