Dr Gaurav Dixit
Associate Professor of Information Systems at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, working across social network analysis, applied machine learning, and computational social science to make algorithmic decision-making fairer and more explainable.
Biosketch & background
Gaurav Dixit, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Information Systems at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, where he has served since 2015. He became an AIS Distinguished Member in 2025, the first from any Indian Institute of Technology, and has held a visiting position at the Indian Institute of Management Indore.
Before his PhD, Gaurav was a Systems/Software engineer at the Product R&D division of Hewlett-Packard (HP), where he was awarded for his performance. He is a proud IITian — a 2007 B.Tech CSE graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, having cleared the IIT-JEE exam in 2003 and received a Merit Scholarship based on his IIT-JEE rank. He earned his PhD (admitted on a CAT percentile of approx. 98%) from the Indian Institute of Management Indore, one of the few Indian institutions featured in the Financial Times Global MBA Rankings.
"Suspiciousness of social media accounts" won the Best Paper Award at the AIS SIG Workshop on Information Systems in Asia Pacific (ISAP) 2024, and is now published in Data Science and Management.
Gaurav serves as an Editorial Board member for Computational Science at Nature Scientific Reports and Nature Scientific Reviews. He has served as a Session Chair at the Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems and as a Track Chair at the India Conference on Information Systems.
His work appears in leading conferences — the International Conference on Information Systems, the Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems, and the Academy of Management Proceedings — and in journals including Data Science and Management, Communications of the Association for Information Systems, Journal of Computer Information Systems, Information Technology for Development, Electronic Commerce Research, Journal of Decision Systems, Journal of Business Analytics, Journal of Global Information Technology Management, and Journal of Cleaner Production.
Gaurav has executed research projects funded by SPARC, DST, SERB, ICSSR, NMHS, and Fuzzy Logix. At IIT Roorkee he typically teaches Digital Transformation to MBA students, and Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning to BTech/MTech students.
He began his professional career at Hewlett-Packard in 2007, working in product R&D for the Network File System (NFS), Network Information Service (NIS), and High Availability (HA) clusters on HP-UX. In 2014 he joined the Strategy Group at Sharda University, working on enterprise software projects (LIBSYS, PeopleSoft, CampusLynx) as a project manager on deputation. He has since run multiple training programs in Data Science, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and AI, and during 2019–20 pioneered online IIT training programs with EdTech partners such as Coursera, WileyNXT, and CloudxLab.
When he gets some free time, he can be found wandering in the Himalayas, exploring ancient mystical places.
